There are pros and cons to working in the private sector as well as the public sector. Public sector brings with job security, power, and a lot of perks. However, on the contrary, there is slower growth, and often, you can feel stagnated, doing the same job over and over again.

Here is a detailed look at the advantages and disadvantages of working in the public sector. As for the private sector, it has both the sides of the coin too. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of working in the private sector.

Advantages of working in the private sector

More employment opportunities- The private sector has plenty more employment opportunities than the public sector. In fact, finding a job in the public sector is nothing short of a miracle. On the other hand, if you are skilled enough, you will be picked up by an organization in the private sector sooner or later.
Good start- Private sector jobs offer a batter start than public sector jobs. Salaries for entry level jobs in private sector are relatively higher than those for public sector jobs.
Fast growth- If you are looking for fast growth in your career, private sector is meant for you. In the public sector, promotions are based on experience than skills. However, in the private sector, if you have the talent, you could quickly get promoted to the higher echelons. The key is to keep working hard.
Better job satisfaction- Everyday is a challenge in the private sector. There are new clients, new projects, and new deadlines to meet. That keeps the whole atmosphere very dynamic and charged up. If you are seeking job satisfaction, you are likely to find it in the private sector than the public sector.

Disadvantages of working in the private sector

Stressful environment- Private sector is more stressful than the public sector. There are tough deadlines to meet, and often, employers seek perfection. There are longer working hours, and odd working shifts. All this can take a toll on you, mentally, as well as physically.
Fear of job cuts- Private sector is very volatile when compared to the public sector. If the economy is weak, and the business is slow, employers in the private sector do not hesitate in laying off people. In uncertain economic times like these, working in the private sector comes with a lot of risk.
Cut-throat competition- You have to face cut-throat competition in the private sector. In other words, you have to be constantly on your toes in order to keep your job and keep moving forward. Office politics is also more common in the private sector than the public sector.

That was an overview of the pros and cons of working in the private sector. That should give you a fair idea of where you are best suited, according to your priorities- the public sector or the private sector.

English language is the official business language around the world. If you are dreaming about a great career in any field, being proficient in written and spoken English is important. In the globalized world of today, you will be dealing with a lot of international clients, travelling places etc. If you have the requisite English language skills, you will find adjusting to new environments and new job responsibilities a lot easier.

If you are not too confident about your English language skills, here are top 10 tips that will help you gain more confidence:

Read good English books- Reading always helps. You may have read this almost everywhere, but it deserves another mention. Pick up books that interest you. In the beginning, you will be slow while reading the books. However, as you keep adding books to your library, you will start improving.
Learn 2 new words everyday- Make it a point to learn two new words every day. Read newspapers and magazines and encircle the words you don’t know the meaning of. Look up their meanings in the dictionary and try using them in a sentence.
Converse in English with your friends and family- You may be shy speaking in English in front of others. But you can always make mistakes in front of your family members and friends. Converse with them in English as much as you can. Slowly, you will start building confidence.
Listen to English language CDs- There are English language MP3s available in the market. Buy some of these and listen to them. They will help you get the right pronunciation of words.
Try and sing along English songs- You may not like listening to English songs. However, listening to English songs is a fun way to improve your English language skills. As you listen to them, try to decipher the lyrics and sing along.
Make mistakes- Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. In fact, you actually learn from your mistakes. When you fumble while speaking, or commit a grammatical error while writing, there will be people who will help you out. And you always tend to remember mistakes that happen in front of people.
Think in English- Another innovative way to improve your English language skills. When you are thinking something, try to think in English. Phrase sentences yourself, and if possible, write them down too.
Translate your Hindi newspaper- Most people who are not comfortable with English, read Hindi newspapers or newspapers in their native language. Try and translate one article everyday in English. Once you translate, get it checked by somebody. Mark your mistakes and try not to repeat them the next time.
Don’t go after fancy words- English is not about using big words. In fact, unless you are an author, big words are not going to get you anywhere. Try not to fret too much about difficult words. Focus on the basics.
Chat in English- We all have some sort of a Messenger on our phone, the most popular being Whatsapp. When you are chatting with your friend over the phone or online, try to do that in English. It helps.

It is a conundrum which many have faced before. A big salary does seem lucrative to start with. However, many times, it comes with the risk of job security. The recent global recession of 2008 is example enough of that. in a bid to cut costs and stay afloat, many companies resorted to job cuts. Very often, people with high salaries were the ones who were fired. Those with comparatively lower salaries were retained. The economy is still unpredictable, with many parts of Europe still reeling in the aftermath of the global recession.

What is the right choice then- big salary of permanent job? There are pros and cons to both the situations. At the end of the day, it all boils down to your priorities. Let's take a closer look at both the options.

Big salary versus permanent job

If it is just a job for you- Sometimes, you have to do a job for the sake of survival. For example, if a person wants to be a musician but does not have the financial support from his family, he would have to do a job in order to sustain himself, until he finds a break. In such a case, a job isn't a career option for him. It is just a job. Thus, a big salary would be more preferable for him than a permanent job. With a big salary, even if he gets fired, he would have plenty with him in order to sustain himself and go after his passion.
If fast growth is what you are after- Big salaries can almost guarantee fast growth, financially, as well as professionally. If you are looking for fast growth in your career, you have to take the risk of a big salary. If you are lucky enough, the risk will pay off. If you are not, well, it's just a part of the game.
If you have long term plans- Many people have long term plans. They want to have a nice house of their own, give their sons or daughters the best of education etc. If you have long term plans too, it is wise to settle for a more permanent job than risk going for high salary. With a relatively permanent job, you are sure of a certain amount coming to your bank account every month. With that surety, you can plan your financials better with your long term plans in mind.
Whether a brand is more important for you- Sometimes, people dream of working with a certain organization. For example, for some techies, working with Google is a dream come true. However, when working with prestigious brands like Google, you may have to compromise on the financial bit in these uncertain economic times. Again, it boils down to your priorities. If a brand is more important to you than financials, you may have to bid adieu to high salaries.

The recent trend

According to a recent survey conducted by a staffing firm, most employees are looking for companies which offer better job security. According to the survey, more than 60% of employees are giving preference to a more secure future than a higher salary. This is in contrast to the trend about 5 years ago when salary and benefits ranked as one of the top criteria for candidates when looking for jobs.

All of us are passionate about something or the other. For some of us, it is music, for others, it is designing, for others it is computers etc. However, the ironical part is, a large majority of people fail to follow their passion in life. There are hundreds of books written on how one must do what he loves to do. However, somehow, people fail to follow that and subject themselves to 50-60 years of drudgery on an average.

Most times, the problem is of security. People are afraid to take risks in life and settle for the safer path. If you think that turning your passion into a career is fraught with danger too, here are some tips on how to make a smoother transition:

Have a back-up plan

We all feel more confident when we know we have something to fall back on. Before you pursue your passion full-time, build a back-up plan. That ways. You will be able to give your passion the best shot. For example, if you want to do something in music, don’t jump straight into it. Have a day job and keep pursuing music part-time. Do so until the time comes when you are ready to take the plunge.

Don’t limit yourself to your immediate environment

That is the mistake most people do when they venture into turning their passion into a career. Do not think about the opportunities in your immediate ecosystem. There is a whole world out there with plenty of opportunities. With internet and social networking, that world is within your reach. Reach out to opportunities outside your ecosystem. Sooner or later, you will meet success.

Meet new people

You never know who might hold the key to your future. Don’t be afraid to talk to people while traveling. Sure, you will meet some douche bags every now and then, but generally, people don’t really mind making new friends. Expand your network, and soon, you will see opportunities coming your way.

Use the online platform

Internet is a great place to promote yourself and your passion too. It doesn’t matter what your passion is, there is always a platform to help you. If you are passionate about music, there is Soundcloud and Beatport; if you are interested in starting a business, there is Linkedin; if you are passionate about blogging, start with having a blog on Wordpress.

Perfect your skills

Nothing works better in building a career than perfecting your skills. Be the best in what you do. People can’t ignore really skilled people for long.

Believe in yourself

This is most important of them all. You have got to believe in yourself and in your abilities. If you believe in yourself, the world will believe in you. Don’t be bothered about being stuck in a situation or ruining your life by following your passion. Even if you fail, there is always a way out. Life gives you several chances!

An interview is the penultimate step to landing a job. Given the ratio of vacancies to candidates in most countries, it is but obvious that you will face rejection in quite a few interviews. However, you need to make sure you put your best foot forward every time you step inside an interview hall.

Portray confidence

Confidence can take you places. Right from the time you step inside an interview hall, you need to portray confidence. Walk straight, maintain a good posture, give a firm handshake, look them in the eye when talking etc. All that shows that you are confident and know what you are talking about.

Do not lie

HR professionals are trained to catch lies. In fact, genetically, we all are capable to catching lies. When you lie, you unconsciously make body movements that give the game away. It is better not to lie during an interview. It is understandable that you want to look good in front of the interviewer. However, lying won’t help you out much. State the facts, portray your skills and leave the rest to the interviewer.

Speak slowly and clearly

Most of us, when we are nervous, tend to speak too quickly. We also tend to blabber a lot. Both those things do not make a good impression on interviewers. In order to make a good impression, it is important to speak slowly and clearly. Keep your answers short and to the point. And do not jump to answer questions asked. Listen to the complete question, articulate your response and then speak.

Do not forget to ask questions when given an opportunity

Interviewers always give you an opportunity to ask questions and clear your doubts. Do not miss this opportunity to portray your interest in the organization and the profile being offered. Ask intelligent questions that will put you in a good light. You will be able to ask intelligent questions when you know about the organization. Thus, research the company well before an interview.

Do not accept a rigid attitude

Most of us go with a rigid mindset when it comes to salary issues. It is important not to have a rigid mindset when discussing salary issues. Always listen to the offer being made and then articulate your response. Adopting a my-way-or-the-highway kind of stance won’t get you anywhere.

Dress the part

According to surveys done in the field, most recruiters form an opinion of you from the moment you walk through the door. Often, it is your posture and your dressing sense which play a part in forming that opinion. It is important that you dress the part. You don’t want to be in jeans and t-shirt when going for a bank interview. Similarly, you don’t want to be too formal when going for an interview in an ad agency or similar place.

The goal of group discussions

The idea of group discussions is to judge you on the following traits:

Knowledge of the subject
Leadership skills
Communication skills
Team skills
Confidence
Alertness and ability to think on your feet

Preparing for group discussions

Work on your communication skills- In group discussions, you are expected to converse in English throughout the entire session. You shouldn’t make the mistake of using your regional language at any point in time during the GD. It is important that you practice your communications before the GD. Attend mock discussions and try to perform to the best of your ability. You could also ask your friends and family to help you out with impromptu discussions. Make it a point to converse in English during every discussion you have, whether with friends, or your batch mates.
Read a lot of books and magazines- Reading is an important part of cracking group discussions. Read a lot of books, magazines and newspapers. Reading exposes you to different perspectives on a certain issue. It helps to build your own perspective, which comes in handy during a GD.
Cultivate the habit of looking at things differently- An important aspect of leadership is creativity. Some people are naturally creative, while others have to cultivate the habit. Much before your GD, cultivate the habit of looking at things from a different angle. Sometimes, you are presented with a GD topic that’s completely abstract, such as “a pink scarf flying over the Red Fort.” Thinking out of the box helps in such situations.
Practice body language- Actions speak louder than words. You are assessed from the moment you walk into a GD hall. Apart from working on your speaking skills, it is important that you work on your overall body language too. Again, to some people, it comes naturally, while others have to work hard at it. The idea is to portray confidence and total control even though you may be feeling nervous inside. Sitting with an upright posture, making eye contact while speaking, keeping your legs straight, firmly on the floor and stationery are just body language tips you can practice for a better GD performance.
Practice in front of the mirror- If you can’t get hold of anyone to help you prepare, make mirror your best friend. Dress as you would on the day of the GD, sit in front of the mirror and speak as fluently as possible. Try to keep your body posture positive and do not become nervous even if you fumble. Practice half an hour every day, and slowly, you will get better at it.
